How to Measure Your Truck Bed for a Cap

How to Measure Your Truck Bed for a Cap

A truck cap that does not fit is worse than no cap at all. Before you order, it helps to understand how beds are measured, because the number on the brochure and the number on your tape do not always match.

Measure the floor, not the rails

Put the tape on the bed floor, from the inside of the bulkhead at the cab to the inside of the closed tailgate. Measure the floor length, not the top rail and not the outside of the truck. That floor number is what fitment is based on.

Why a 5-foot bed is not always 5 feet

Truck makers round. A bed sold as five feet can measure anywhere from about 60 to 64 inches depending on the brand and model year. That is why we match caps to your exact truck, generation and bed length, instead of to a rounded label. Two trucks with the same advertised bed can need different caps.

Short bed, standard bed, long bed

Most half-ton and mid-size trucks come in a short bed (around 5 feet), a standard bed (around 6 to 6.5 feet), or a long bed (around 8 feet). The cab type, whether it is a crew cab or an extended cab, changes which bed length your truck was built with. When in doubt, measure rather than assume.

Write down three things

For a clean quote, note your make and model, the model year, and your measured bed length. With those three, fitment is straightforward and there is no back and forth.

Our configurator does the matching for you. Enter your truck on Shop by Vehicle and it shows only the caps that fit your generation and bed length.
